Disaster Recovery and Backup Strategy for VIEW System Controllers

Not having a periodic backup strategy makes the metrology system and the customer’s business vulnerable to viruses, drive failures, and data loss. Without an adequate system backup, restoring a system can be a lengthy and costly process. We recommend that customers develop a comprehensive plan to backup important system files, routines, and calibration values on a regular basis. In 2016, Quality Vision International began using a system ‘recovery key’ where an image of the drive is stored on a USB thumb drive. Then the recovery image can be loaded on the drive should it become necessary. Any files that are unique to each system, such as stage and lens calibration files and windows registry backups, will need to be reloaded from a previous backup copy.

Systems running VMS 8 or Elements 4 or newer can run the batch file VIEWMM_Backup.bat included with your system. This will save system specific files for that system only. This batch file is loaded in the C:\ViewMM directory. For systems operating VMS 7, a modified version of the batch file can be requested from VIEW directly by sending an email to service@viewmm.com. Please list the machine serial number and full version of VMS. The full version can be found by clicking on Help, then About, in the VMS program.

PROCEDURE – Backup of ViewMM specific system files (do this before proceeding)

  1. On each system, load and run the above mentioned VIEWMM_Backup.bat file. *Note: If you have multiple VMS or Elements versions, the files in older versions may not be copied.
  2. Check that all files to backup were copied. In Windows Explorer, open folder C:\desktop_backup\VMS\VMSx. Where ‘x’ is the VMS major version.
  3. The following files typically are copied: Hardware.cfg, Lookup.tbl or XYcorrections.txt, and registry backups for HKeyLocalMachine and HKeyCurrentUser. Save these copies in a secure location that is easily accessible.

In 2016, systems started shipping with a system ‘recovery key’ where an image of the drive is stored on a USB thumb drive. Then the recovery image can be loaded on the drive should it become necessary. Any files that are unique to each system, such as stage and lens calibration files and windows registry backups, will need to be reloaded from a previous backup copy.
Controller recovery should only be used as a last resort, after other troubleshooting methods have failed and at the advice of Quality Vision Services (QVS) or VIEW Micro-Metrology personnel. A back up of all data should be performed before a system controller recovery is attempted.
